Guidance For Beginners - Online Money Making

Are people generally serious when looking to join online money making programs, schemes, ideas, affiliates? Having spent many years in sales and marketing, in the real world, actually talking to live people, presenting my sales pitch and closing the sale, earning the commission. Considered myself reasonably experienced and skillful.
Based in Norfolk England the area in particular was always considered to be The Salesman Graveyard. I was fortunate enough to have worked with an American Company who insisted at sales meeting no one applauded but rather to ring a cow bell, odd, yes I thought so too. However it soon became apparent the Brits could learn a thing or two from these guys. PMA Positive Mental Attitude they call it.
My years travelling the country roads come to an end and I look around for alternatives to supplement my income, knowing I wish to work from my country cottage I turn to the internet for inspiration. It is not long before my email inbox starts to flood with so many great offers I hardly know which one to follow up next, but hold on a while, are they serious when they claim its possible to make how much money in such a short space of time!
With this package I not only get a full package of e-books CD's and a whole lot more, in fact the total package is so big it must take a large van to deliver all of these products, and whats more they wish to give me lots of free, free information just simply because I entered my email address. They go on to show me copies of their income and photos of big bright red cars they have purchased. Now something to aspire to for me, a red sports car! at my age?
Is this the real world of affiliate marketing, IE: Put so much material out and see what little of it actually sticks? sales has always been a numbers game, target your market and follow up the sales leads to close the deal. Call me old fashioned, but who do they think they are kidding? Do we not need to be serious about this whole thing and look long term as apposed to grab what you can at the time?
My early experience taught me how I feel someone entering the online money market should approach it, and therefore for a good honest, No Nonsense approach and beginners guide get more information. Am I just cynical or touching on a little truth here? You tell me.
